WineFi - When is the best time to invest in fine wine?

Timing In Fine Wine Investment

Fine wine investment isn’t just about what you buy - it’s about when you buy it. Our latest analysis on red Burgundy reveals a surprising truth: rushing in on release could leave returns on the table.

Conventional wisdom often assumes that securing allocations at release represents the most effective route to returns in fine wine. In practice, this is not only complicated by the need to accept secondary wines alongside primary targets, but the timing itself is not supported by empirical evidence.

Our analysis indicates that purchasing on release is suboptimal. During the initial years of their lifecycle, red Burgundy wines consistently underperform relative to the benchmark, with a clear inflection point occurring around year six.

From this stage, as the wines enter their prime drinking window, performance begins to accelerate. Historical data suggests that this period of relative outperformance can extend for nearly two decades, offering a significant window of opportunity for disciplined investors.

Producer Spotlight: Domaine Leflaive

Analyst Note from Matthew Small

Domaine Leflaive ranks among Burgundy’s most celebrated white wine estates, with an exceptional portfolio of Premier Cru sites and four Grand Crus, including the illustrious Montrachet. Leflaive’s Montrachet Grand Cru, the estate’s flagship, is produced only in top vintages and never commercially released, making it exceptionally rare and highly sought after. Limited to a few hundred bottles each vintage, it attracts intense collector demand.

Over the past decade, Montrachet has delivered an impressive average annual CAGR of 12.9% and an average critic score of 95. Leflaive’s low regional beta of 0.27 offers investors not only robust returns but also valuable diversification.
